IB Diploma advice for parents Eleni Vardaki Konstantinos Vardakis

IB Diploma Advice for PArents

In this episode of “Let’s Talk About the IB”, I had the honor of interviewing a wonderful father of two IB graduates, who also happens to be a senior representative for the EU diplomatic service.

My dad, Konstantinos Vardakis, flew in to Athens, en route from Baghdad to Brussels, specifically to make this video with his advice to parents who are new to the IB Diploma.

I hope you enjoy this exclusive window inside the heart and mind of a conscientious, loving, supportive parent of four who has over 10 years of experience interviewing new recruits, many of whom where IB Diploma graduates.

"I am confronted, more and more, with IB Diploma graduates who lack social skills and community development."
Konstantinos Vardakis
Senior EU Diplomat

I must say, as an IB History and TOK teacher, I have noticed this same trend in IB Diploma alumni myself. It seems as if the CAS (the Community Service part of CAS, in particular) has become a tickbox thing that kids have to do just because it’s a requirement. Interest in how many likes and followers they have on Instagram seems to be of greater interest.

Even getting into a prestigious university appears to have become more about what you put on your LinkedIn account – public image management – than anything else.

How is the IB Diploma program helping to make the world a better place…when more and more IB graduates are showing up to interviews for competitive jobs, lacking social skills and care for others? Food for thought.
