This EFT session took place a week before Christmas. We started by tapping on the stress caused by suddenly falling ill—the frustration of unfinished tasks when you need to rest and recover. Before addressing her meditation procrastination, we first eased those nerves and reduced stress connected to this unexpected situation.
We began by measuring the stress intensity, which felt like 7 yellow butterflies fluttering frantically in her stomach. They seemed to flutter quickly, as if urgently trying to do something but unable to reach their goal. The thoughts linked to that nervous feeling were, “So much to do, not enough time,” and “Where do I start? There’s just a lot to do.” The thought “So much to do, not enough time” felt about 30% true, representing a small roadblock.
As the tapping progressed, the butterflies dropped from 7 to 5 , accompanying a release of tension in her shoulders, then down to 3 butterflies, which seemed less frantic. The intensity of that thought eased to 20%, shifting to “I just need to take it at my own pace today.”
Next, we applied the therapeutic EFT Choices Technique. We started with one round tapping out the negatives, followed by one round tapping in the positives, and then a third round alternating between the two. Afterwards, the butterflies became more of a relaxed mental image—like a lazy summer day with butterflies you simply admire rather than feel fluttering nervously in your stomach.
Finally, we returned to the original thought: “So much to do, not enough time,” which now felt nearly gone, replaced by, “It’s all gonna have to wait until I feel up to it.”
TARGETED WORK: EFT SESSION for Meditation procrastination
At this stage, we were ready to start working on her goal: building a consistent meditation habit. This meant exploring and removing blocks making her put off this healthy habit.
Her self-care goal was to improve her weekly meditation practice over six weeks. Specifically, she planned to:
Meditate for at least 45 minutes once a week on a day off (weekend).
Increase her 10-15 minute morning meditations before work from 2-3 times a week to 5-6 times a week (weekdays).
With this clear SMART goal (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound), we began tapping to clear blocks so starting this plan tomorrow felt possible for her.
She recognized that had a pattern of putting other things before herself (“I have to do this first”). She wanted to switch that and make time for herself.
The first block was her worry: “Am I gonna be able to do this?” when she tended to put home tasks first (e.g. “I need to take the trash out”). These came before self-care, so she would run out of time and so her morning meditation wouldn’t get done. The associated emotion was frustration, which felt like a 6/10. She also had neck tension that felt like a yellow 5/10 in intensity. The thought “I’m not going to succeed in 6 weeks” felt 60% true before tapping. After just one round, it dropped to 50%.
After more tapping, we tested what came up for her when she thought of her 6-week meditation goal again. The neck tension fell from bright yellow 5 to light yellow 2. The frustration was now onlye a 2.5, down from 6, overshadowed by a new annoyance at her that felt like a 4/10 in intensity.
One round of tapping later, and the annoyed at herself dropped from 4/10 to a 2/10. The tension in the back of her neck also dropped from a 2/10 to “maybe a 1/10 – pretty much gone”. And the negative thought of not being able to achieve her 6-week meditation self-care goal had dropped from feeling like a 50% to a 30% true. This is because “I’m realizing I’m annoyed with myself because I’m perpetuating the cycle.”
Finally, we agreed to do the EFT Choices technique on that annoyance with herself when thinking of leaving for work and not having meditated.
ENd of EFT Session for Meditation procrastination
By this stage, her annoyance was pretty much gone, the neck tension had disappeared, and her frustration was down to a 0. The thought “I won’t reach this goal in 6 weeks” dropped from feeling 30% to 15% true.
Her new thoughts were, “I can do this. I can do this. I need to do this.” In EFT coaching, we call this a Client Cognitive Reframe, which is when a client shifts to positive thoughts after clearing the negative emotions blocking them.
We ended by using the Choices Technique on the remaining 15% doubt she felt about reaching her self-care goal. She reduced that doubt to 10%, agreeing to keep it as a helpful kind of doubt—a challenge, like saying “I’ll believe it when I see it.” This doubt felt motivating.
Before wrapping up, I asked her to think about her 6-week meditation goal. Her new thought was: “I can do this. I can definitely do this.”
